Who Wants to be a China Doll?

Oh my, I took quite the haitus!  There were some changes in my life, so my apologies for the dry spell.  But I haven't stopped thinking about writing!  That being said, at dinner one night, I saw a gal dressed like a cliched china doll.  No joke-- not chinoiserie stye, but full on cheongsam, super long hair in a ponytail, complete with chopsticks spiked through.  As an Asian woman myself, I stared in disbelief.  She was on a date looking like she came straight out of a Chinese Barbie box.  And I wondered, if she was on a date with an Asian man, would she have dressed like this?  Or did she dress like precisely because she was on a date with a white dude?  We all use fashion to express ourselves, so what kind of message was she trying to send?  Curiouser and curiouser...

Anyway, what do you think?  Tacky and cliched?  Or ethnic pride?  Chinese ladies, would you wear a similar outfit on a date?

Petition Against Forever 21

Forever 21 was never really my thing, even when I was in my twenties.  I just didn't shop there because I found the clothes too trendy and short-lived.  I don't need to recycle my wardrobe every time a new trend comes out.  That being said, I wasn't pro-Forever 21 or con-Forever 21 either.  More of a "meh, it's just not my style" kind of thing.  Until now.  As a fashion junkie, this just crosses the line.

I'm appalled that Forever 21's "creative team" is basically not doing any real work.  Sure, we all get inspiration and ideas from others.  But to stoop so low as to blatantly steal an exact design?  Unbelievable.  C'mon, how about some real creativity?  Isn't that what you're paid to do?  Who is signing off on these anyway?  Sure, eco-friendly designs are great too, but I'm more flabbergasted about the complete fashion plagiarism.  And how do they continue to get away with it?  Lawsuit after lawsuit, and they still do it?  Have you no ethics?  Have you no shame?  Dirty, sneaking, thieving bastards!

You can read more about it and sign the petition here:

Shoes as Art?

Would you, could you wear these?  I can see these shoes displayed as a part of a art show, but not being worn in every day life.  They might work for Lady Gaga, but for those of us in the real world, what do you think?

Speaking of funky shoes, I'm seeing a trend of spikey heels.  I'm a bit thrown off by these also.  Are they a weapon?  Another form of wearable art?  A few months ago, I saw these Sam Edelman Lorissa shoes.  Last night I saw a similar pair in my BCBG Lookbook.  That being said, my style is not edgy and adventurous like Rihanna. I can totally see her wearing these.

These certainly aren't for the tame.  I'd venture a guess and say that the ladies who do wear these type of shoes want to be noticed.  Thoughts?  Hot or not?  Scary or spicy?

Curse You DSW!

Okay, not really because I found two pairs of sexy heels!  First up is the B. Makowsky Snake Pump.  I'm usually not too keen on animal prints, especially on shoes, but these just caught my attention.  And they are surprisingly comfortable, even at 4" high.

And my super find was the Marc by Marc Jacobs Piped Pump.  I got these in black and, although it is a very basic and simple design, they are definitely sexy.  These would pair very well with a nice pencil skirt.  And at $99.94, they are a great price!

Designer Jeans-- To Buy or Not To Buy?

Are designer jeans worth the money?  I've heard that they make a booty look more bootylicious.  (I, unlike most Asian ladies, have a sizable ass, so no worries there.)  So why spend $100+ on jeans?  What's wrong with jeans from, say, Banana Republic or Old Navy?

I snagged a pair of Hudson triangle pocket wide leg jeans (RN107906) and, I can't say for sure sure, but I think there is unicorn hair woven into them.  They are just magical-- incredibly comfortable and super flattering!  I've been wearing them a ton lately.  The same goes for a pair from J. Brand.  The denim is soft and I feel like I can move in them.  In fact, I rode my bike the other day wearing my Hudsons.  The same cannot be said for my Banana Republic and Old Navy jeans.  I can wear them, but they just don't have the "please wrap all over my body" factor that these fancy jeans have.

So yes, spend the extra dollars on the fancy jeans!  They might just become your favorites.  Just don't forget to buy them on sale!  I found my Hudsons on Craigslist.org.  ;)

Maternity Clothes Post-Baby

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit that I still wear quite a few of my maternity clothes.  And my son is nearly a year old!  I knew that it would take a while for my body to bounce back, but I'm still not quite there.  I occasionally throw myself a pity party, but I try to remember two things:
  1. Maternity pants are perfect when going to eat at a buffet!  No one, except you, knows that you're wearing stretchy pants.
  2. Old Navy maxi dresses look great on the post-baby body.  I lived in my dresses right after my son was born, and I still wear them now.  Remember the dress I wore on my flight from Austin?  That was one of the dresses in my rotation.  And I feel like a hot mama!

Reversible Clothing

I bought this Twist Back Sweater from Gap recently and after I wore it, I thought, would I actually utilize both sides?  Based on the models, it is very cute when worn with the opening on the back, but that would mean I need a backless bra.  Which I don't have because I don't have anything backless, until now.  (Maybe I should buy one of those.)  But when would I wear it that way?  Certainly not to work.  And I don't really go out anymore these days.  (God, I'm old...)  Should I find a reason to wear it that way?  Or simply have it in my closet as a vest, as the Gap description calls it.  I guess time will tell!  I don't think fashion can make reversible clothing very easily, which is why we probably don't see much of it.  I was intrigued by the Gap's proposal of two tops in one!

That also got me thinking though, how many times have we worn something backward? There were the Kris Kross days.  Oh, and right around that time were the jeans with the zipper in the back.  (If you were born after 1980, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about!)  Oh, the good old days of the early 90s...

Oh Yeah!

Thank you to Linda F. from San Jose, CA! I hope you enjoy your purchase!

Comfy or Cute?

I recently went to Austin, TX to visit some friends and had to make a decision. What am I going to wear on the plane? Do I go with comfy and wear slouchy pants or sweats? Or do I try to wear something cute that is less comfortable?

I've seen some women in full garb when traveling-- a ton of jewelry, sky high heels, a super cute dress. They look beautiful, and more power to them! I wish I was able to be posh when dealing with airplane funk, pushing a stroller and carrying a car seat.

I ended up choosing a jersey maxi dress for the flight. Comfy and cute! But not as comfy as sweats, no make up and a ponytail. :) I did, however, get to second base with a TSA agent. HA! Turns out I was picked to be searched due to the length of my dress. I guess, theoretically, I could be hiding something under there. It wasn't a pleasant experience, but not unpleasant either. It just... was. (As I told the agent, modesty kind of went out the window the second I went into labor with my son.) Would I wear that dress again and run the risk of getting frisked? Absolutely! I felt cute and the jersey knit was comfortable. Plus, since it was long, I didn't feel awkward about potentially flashing anyone any of my naughty bits.

Talk about some shoes! I don't think I could pull these off, but my co-worker Christina totally rocks it! If you're interested, she purchased them at Burlington Coat Factory.  They are also available in blue on Amazon.com. Just do a search for Bumper Kakoa Bootie.

Short is the New Tall

There are all these rules for short gals. You can't wear maxi dresses because you'll look shorter. You can't wear capri pants because they cut your legs and you'll look shorter. You can't wear skirts or dresses past the knees because you'll look shorter. Well, I say, screw it! Maxi dresses are so comfortable and they look great. And since it's one long, flowy dress, I think anyone can pull them off, even us shorties. Same with capris. But just make sure they are hitting just below the knee or mid-calf. Otherwise, you'll just be flooding it. And lastly, starlets like Reese Witherspoon always wear skirts and dresses that aren't longer than knee length in order to elongate their legs. However, I think the right hem at longer lengths can still work. It just needs to be the right fit and cut.

The bottom line though is, where what is most comfortable for you. All of us have a signature style. Mine does involve capris.

New Items Posted!

I'm selling two more adorable Coach satchels, an Alice + Olivia tank and Elie Tahari slacks. Come on over and take a look! Gracias!

Jeremy Scott's Underwear Purse

While browsing the wonderful worldwide web, I ran across this and thought, I-MUST-HAVE-THIS!  Well, no, not really.  More like, WTF?  I agree that fashion can be an expression of humor, or be tongue-in-cheek, but...  Really?  The only person I imagine actually carrying this around is Lady Gaga.  And we all know her fashion sense is hers and hers alone.  (More power to her!)  Would you purchase this accessory for $424?

Totally Loving Right Now...

My Hannah and Gracie Terry Moto Jacket, which of course, I can't seem to find a picture of online!  I have it in gray, but here is one in black that someone was selling on eBay.  (I found mine at Nordstrom Rack.)  It is super comfortable and lightweight, and it goes with everything.  I wear it all the time!

I just bought this Graphic Chiffon Maxi Dress from Express yesterday.  I no longer fit into an extra small, but I'm also only 5'2", so anything larger and it'll be too long.  I didn't try it on yet, so we'll see how it fits!  But it is just gorgeous and the colors are so vibrant!  It'll be great to wear this spring and summer.

I got my hands on the Coach Leather Garnet Bag and it is just drool worthy!  The magnetic closures make it easy to stay open and keep closed.  It is roomy and holds everything that I need.  Plus the plum color is beautiful.  I had been eying this bag for a while, and finally couldn't resist any longer!

Other than the Oscars

For my inaugural post, I shall make only a brief mention of the Oscars.  (Since you can't talk about fashion without saying something about such a fashionable night!  But there were also be many, many articles of the sort.)

LOVED:
  • Halle Berry (Does she ever not look stunning?)
  • Mila Kunis (gorgeous color, gorgeous detail)
  • Natalie Portman (wish I could've looked that good while pregnant!)
HATED:
  • Scarlett Johansson (a hot mess)
  • Nicole Kidman (so terrible, I'm at a loss for words)
  • Melissa Leo (a giant doily)
  • Gwyneth Paltrow (like a roll of foil)
 So moving on...

Will someone please explain jeggings to me?  I have a difficult enough time trying to justify leggings, especially when the top stops at the waist, and thereby doesn't cover the appropriate areas.  And skinny jeans are just atrocious.  They just make skinny girls look too skinny and healthy girls look heavier.  (Plus, it's not okay when guys start wearing fashion trends that were meant for women.)  So why combine two hideous trends?  GAH!  Please stop the jeggings.  I implore you.  :)
